Anthropic Establishes Public Benefit Fund, Commits 5% of Shares to Public Interest
Per Anthropic's official announcement, the company will transfer a portion of its equity into the newly established Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. Subject to shareholder approval, 5% of the company's shares are committed as an initial contribution today; going forward, each time the company's valuation increases by 50% relative to a predefined benchmark, the board of directors may, at its discretion, add an additional 2% of shares to the fund. The fund is structured as a wholly owned LLC, rather than a 501(c)(3) or other traditional charitable organization framework, and the equity held by the fund will not be used for lobbying activities or political donations in any jurisdiction. Anthropic states that the fund will be deployed for large-scale donations to traditional non-profit organizations, direct disbursements to targeted groups, and other eligible use cases, with one key priority being mitigating the labor market disruptions brought about by AI — an initiative the company has already committed $200 million to previously.
