Vitalik: Ethereum Should Offload Heavy Cryptographic Computations to Clients, with On-Chain Layers Only Verifying Proofs and Results
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin further elaborated on the EIP-8288 roadmap on the X platform, arguing that neither precompiled contracts nor the EVM are ideal locations to host the majority of Ethereum's cryptographic support, as both rely on data that must be included on-chain, which typically consumes calldata space within blocks. He stated that even with the adoption of PeerDAS and blocks-in-blobs, data throughput will begin to face practical pressure once it exceeds approximately 8MB/s. Vitalik advocates that Ethereum should be regarded as a "cryptographic world computer", and no content that does not need to be placed in the data and execution "main thread" should occupy main thread resources.
