Zakura Proposes Allocating Unique Viewing Keys for Each ZEC Cross-Chain Swap to Mitigate Future Quantum Computer Cracking Risks

The Zakura team behind the new Zcash software has published an engineering paper proposing to assign a distinct viewing key to every ZEC swap executed via NEAR Intents, to defend against privacy threats posed by future quantum computers. When a user swaps ZEC for USDC, NEAR Intents publicly broadcasts one of the user's Zcash addresses on the NEAR public chain for refund purposes; this address carries a public key derived from the viewing key, which future quantum computers could potentially reverse-engineer using Shor's algorithm to trace the full history of the account's incoming transactions and associated memos. Zakura's design grants each swap exclusive use of its own viewing key, keeps the spending key retained in the user's primary account, and locates refunds via Private Information Retrieval (PIR).
