Professional security guidance has been provided for the traceability investigation of the Binance theft incident.
Combined with past security forensics experience, SlowMist Chief Information Security Officer 23pds pointed out that in this one-time Binance asset theft incident, the attacker was able to bypass the platform's risk control system. At present, it is still critical to confirm whether the intrusion path stems from private key leakage or a compromised signing machine, and he personally leans toward the private key leakage hypothesis.

The security expert also assessed that the attacker most likely used a customized withdrawal tool to complete the asset transfer operation.

For subsequent traceability and forensics work, he recommended that the platform's security department focus its core investigation efforts on mapping the full chain of private key leakage, as well as identifying and tracing the characteristics of abnormal withdrawal tools, to more efficiently locate the attack source and recover the stolen assets.

BreakingBinance: Security Incident May Involve Compromise of DevOps Engineer's Computer, No Private Key Leakage Detected, Estimated Total Loss Approximately $6.3 Billion

Binance has released a security incident update, noting that its preliminary investigation indicates the incident may involve the compromise of a DevOps engineer's laptop, which allowed attackers to access a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. Binance states no evidence of any wallet private key leakage has been identified, and a detailed technical post-mortem analysis will be published once the investigation is completed and all facts are fully verified. Binance estimates the total loss at approximately $6.3 billion, and has collaborated with blockchain partners to freeze affected assets, with roughly $3 billion already frozen on-chain. Binance will cover all losses via its SAFU Fund and corporate capital, ensuring user funds remain secure, and will release an updated proof of reserves after remediation is completed. As an immediate preventive measure, Binance has temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals, revoked authorization for affected addresses, and partnered with law enforcement agencies and blockchain intelligence partners to trace and recover funds.
