Unprecedented Automated Money Laundering Pattern Detected in Stolen Binance Funds, Chainalysis Discloses Details

Characteristics of the new automated money laundering pattern revealed
Blockchain analysis agencies have detected that the funds linked to the Binance theft incident employ an automated money laundering operation logic that has never been observed in the industry. The attackers initiated thousands of transactions within an extremely short period, executing operations automatically via programs to obfuscate fund traceability paths, breaking the conventional operational logic where traditional hacker funds are directly transferred to downstream addresses.

Under this pattern, funds do not flow in a single direction, but circulate repeatedly across a large number of distinct addresses, even flowing back to previously used historical addresses multiple times, drastically increasing the difficulty of on-chain tracking. A large number of involved addresses exhibit uniform operational characteristics: they first receive exactly 1 TRX, then quickly transfer out after receiving more involved funds subsequently.

The attackers once transferred a total of 500 million USD in stablecoins to a dedicated exchange wallet, which completed large-scale exchange operations in less than 20 minutes, swapping 325 million USD worth of stablecoins for 285 million USD worth of ETH. The remaining 175 million USD in stablecoins was transferred to a dedicated intermediate wallet approximately 10 minutes later to complete fund splitting and circulation.
