Ethereum Reorganization Causes THORChain Suspension, Accidentally Delays Money Laundering Process of Funds Stolen From Binance
An unexpected Ethereum chain reorganization triggered a critical anomaly in the cross-chain protocol.
On the morning of October 31 Eastern Time, a chain reorganization event occurred on Ethereum, which directly caused a logical anomaly in the cross-chain protocol THORChain. The protocol erroneously issued a double refund to a user who deposited 10 ETH, immediately triggering its emergency suspension mechanism.

This suspension shut down the swap functions of the vast majority of THORChain cross-chain bridges for all users. Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis noted that this fault accidentally disrupted the operations of a North Korean money laundering syndicate, significantly delaying the money laundering transfer progress of the large volume of funds previously stolen from Binance.

According to data from THORChain's public status API, the transaction functions of 12 out of the 13 public chains supported by the protocol remain suspended at present. Only the outbound signature permissions for most chains are temporarily kept active, and full normal service has not yet been restored.
