Prediction Markets Including Polymarket Face Strict Regulation in Australia, ASIC Confirms No Operating Applications Have Been Received to Date
Sarah Court, Chair of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), stated at a parliamentary hearing that the regulator has not received any applications submitted by prediction market operators. Prediction market platforms such as Polymarket may face stringent regulatory oversight in Australia, and any application for an operating license will be subject to rigorous review. Sarah Court noted that the trading mechanism of prediction markets is similar to binary options, which have already been banned in Australia, featuring an all-or-nothing payout structure. Their underlying trading instruments are often unrelated to investments or financial markets. While Australian users can directly access relevant overseas platforms, they are not protected by local financial regulations, and cannot access safeguards such as dispute resolution mechanisms and client fund protection measures.
